History of Computer


A computer word is derived from the Latin word "compute" which means to calculate.

Abacus is the first computing device. Abacus word is derived from 'ABAX' which means to calculate.

Calculating devices are:

1. John Napier calculating device.
2. Blasce Pascal calculating device.
3. Polymath Gottfried Leibniz calculating device.
4. Joseph Maries Jacquard calculating device.


British Mathematician Charles Babbage is known as the father of the computer. Difference Engine is built by Charles Babbage and Analytic Engine is designed by Charles Babbage but not built by him because he died before that.


Computer Generations are mention below:

1. 1st Generation:  Its period is from 1940-1956. The technology used in this generation is Vaccum tubes and memory is Magnetic Drum.

Example: EDVAC, EDSAC, UNIVAC, ENIAC.

2. 2nd Generation: Its period is from 1956-1963. The technology used in this generation is Transistors and memory is Magnetic tapes. 


Example: IBM-401.

3.  3rd Generation: Its period is from 1964-1971. The technology used in this generation is IC's (Integrated circuit) and memory is Floppy disk. 


Example: IBM-370.

4. 4th Generation: Its period is from 1972-2010. The technology used in this generation is MIcroprocessor, LSI, VLSI and memory are CD-ROM, DVD.

Example: Intel processors based machines.


5. 5th Generations: Its period is from 2010-Till Date. The technology used in this generation is Artifical Intelligence and memory is Flash memory.

Example: Robotics.
